Naro is a community in the municipality consortium Agrigento outdoors in the region Sicily in Italy .

Location and dates

Naro is located 30 kilometers east of Agrigento at an altitude of 520 meters. The place has 7346 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), they live on an area of ​​207 square kilometers. The main occupation of the inhabitants are agriculture and the textile industry.

The neighboring municipalities are Agrigento, Caltanissetta ( CL ), Camastra , Campobello di Licata , Canicattì , Castrofilippo , Delia (CL), Favara , Licata , Palma di Montechiaro , Ravanusa and Sommatino (CL).

history

The area of ​​Naro was inhabited as early as the Neolithic Age, as evidenced by hut-like residential buildings and some graves that are assigned to the Stentinello culture . Further finds come from the early Bronze Age Castelluccio culture . The current city was founded under Arab rule and grew from the 12th century. Under Friedrich II it became a royal city. Thereafter, Naro passed as a fief to the Chiaramonte family , who in the 14th century had a castle built in the typical Chiaramonte style in place of an Arab fortress and many churches restored. After the decline of the Chiaramonte family, the city passed into royal possession.

Attractions

  • The fort or chateau Chiaramonte dates from the 14th century and has a rectangular floor plan with strong walls and two towers. The eastern tower, which was probably built under Frederick II, is interesting.
  • The sanctuary of San Calogero on Via Umberto I has a baroque facade . Inside is the grotto where the hermit lived.
  • The Church of San Giovanni Battista on Via Dante was built in the 17th century and has beautiful frescoes from the 18th century.
  • The ruins of the Chiesa Matrice Vecchia date from the Gothic period . The pointed arch portal is preserved .
  • The new church Chiesa Matrice from the 18th century was formerly a Jesuit church .
  • The Church of San Francesco, built in the 13th century, was renovated in 1635 and received a facade in the style of the Sicilian Baroque .
  • The construction of the Church del Santissimo Salvatore from the 16th century remained unfinished.
  • The parish church, built in 1619, houses a late Gothic baptismal font and beautiful stucco work.
  • The 14th century church of Santa Caterina now has a baroque facade. Inside, the Gothic style has been restored. You can see frescoes and a baptismal font from the 15th century.
  • The Gaetani Palace in Via Dante has a magnificent baroque facade with scenic representations.
  • The town hall and the Feliciana library are located in a former Minorite monastery from the 13th century. Manuscripts, miniatures and archaeological finds from the area are exhibited here.

Surroundings

About two kilometers southeast of Naro is the 542 meter high mountain Castellazzo di Camastra. Early Christian catacombs were found there during excavations .

Events

In the summer months there are theater performances in the Sicilian dialect called "scalinata" in the city center . In addition, every year on June 18 there is a big festival in honor of the patron saint San Calogero.
