Ribera is a town and municipality in the consortium of municipalities Agrigento outdoors in the region Sicily in Italy .
Location and dates
Ribera is located 51 kilometers northwest of Agrigento on a hill between the coastal rivers Verdura and Magazzolo , 7 km from the coast. 18,492 residents live here (as of December 31, 2019), who mainly work in agriculture, viticulture and the food industry.
The neighboring municipalities are Bivona , Calamonaci , Caltabellotta , Cattolica Eraclea , Cianciana and Sciacca .
After the rail traffic to Ribera was discontinued in 1985, the place can only be reached by road today.
history
The city of Allava stood here in ancient times . Byzantine necropolises testify to a settlement in the early Middle Ages. In 1627 the present city was founded by Luigi Guiglielmo Moncada, Prince of Paternò . The city got its name from his wife, Maria Afan de Ribera.
Buildings
The parish church in Piazza Duomo dates from the 18th century. The town hall from the 19th century stands in the Piazza Duomo. The birth house of the politician Francesco Crispi can be visited.
