Bivona is a town in the municipality of Agrigento consortium outdoors in the region Sicily in Italy .

Location and dates

Bivona is 62 km north-west of Agrigento . 3438 inhabitants live here (as of December 31, 2019), who mainly work in agriculture. Citrus fruits, wheat, olives and cereals are grown.

The neighboring communities are Alessandria della Rocca , Calamonaci , Castronovo di Sicilia ( PA ), Cianciana , Lucca Sicula , Palazzo Adriano (PA), Ribera and Santo Stefano Quisquina .

After rail traffic to Bivona was discontinued in 1959, the place can only be reached by road today.

history

Bivona was first mentioned in 1172. In the 14th century the place was founded and a fort was built. In 1374 Bivona went to the Chiaromonte family, then to the Peralta family and the De Luna. In 1529 there was a bloody dispute with the Peralta family from Sciacca and Bivona. The House of Montcada ruled here until 1728 .

Attractions

The parish church was built in the 14th century by the Chiaromonte family and the main portal is well worth seeing. The church of San Bartelomeo also has an interesting portal from the 16th century.
