Burgio is a city in the municipality consortium Agrigento outdoors in the region Sicily in Italy .

Location and dates

Burgio is 65 km northwest of Agrigento and 100 km south of Palermo . 2586 inhabitants live here (as of December 31, 2019), who mainly work in agriculture.

The neighboring communities are Caltabellotta , Chiusa Sclafani ( PA ), Lucca Sicula , Palazzo Adriano (PA) and Villafranca Sicula .

history

The Arabs built a fort here, around which the community developed. In the Middle Ages, the community received the typical image with narrow streets and winding streets.

Attractions

  • The castle was built by the Arabs, taken over by the Normans , has belonged to the Paternò family since 1292 and has been owned by the Peralta family since the 14th century. The fort has a strictly rectangular floor plan.
  • The oldest church is Santa Maria di Rifesi , built under the Normans in 1172. Populated in 1188 by monks expelled from the holy land from the monastery of SS. Trinitas de Refech .
  • The most important work in the Chiesa Madre , consecrated to Sant 'Antonio Abate , is the Madonna di Trapani by Vincenzo Gaggini from 1566. Orazio Ferraro di Giuliana created the elaborate stucco work . Mention should also be made of a Byzantine icon and a crucifix that was made around 1200.
  • Antonello Gagini created a sculpture of the title saint for the Chiesa San Vito in 1522.
  • The church, renamed Maria Santissimo del Carmelo by San Sebastian in 1460, houses a statue of “Madonna della Pace” and stucco work from 1760.
  • In the Santa Maria della Grazie a sculpture of Santa Anna can be seen, which is ascribed to the Gagginis school. The 17th century cloister adjacent to the church is significant .
  • The painting “Seven Sacraments” Zoppo di Gangi is in the Chiesa dei Cappuccini .
  • The place houses the only bell foundry in Sicily and one of the few still producing in Italy, the Fonderia Rocco Cacciabaudo .
