Antonello Gagini (* 1478 in Palermo , † 1536 ibid) was an Italian sculptor of the Renaissance in Sicily .

His family, sometimes also written as Gangini or Gaggini , settled in Sicily in the middle of the 15th century. Gagini was the son of the sculptor Domenico Gagini , who was also his teacher. He was the father of Giacomo Gaggini , Fazio Gaggini , Vincenzo Gaggini and Giovanni Domenico Gaggini (1503–1567), who were also active as sculptors in Sicily.

Works

Antonello Gagini was the creator of some church sculptures in Sicily, especially in the Messina region . He is particularly known for his religious figures: for example in the Cappella di San Giovanni Battista in the Cathedral of Messina . The original figure was created by Antonello Gagini in 1525.

A large selection of his works can be found in the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia in Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo, including Annunciazione (Annunciation), Madonna con il Bambino (Madonna and Child), Madonna della neve (Madonna of the Snow) and Apparizione della Croce a Costantino (Apparition of the cross for Constantine). He also worked on the Cathedral of Palermo .
