Giacomo Gaggini or Gagini (born December 15, 1517 in Palermo , † June 25, 1598 ibid) was a Renaissance sculptor in Sicily .

Life

Giacomo Gagini was a member of the most important family of sculptors in Sicily. He was the son of Antonello and brother of Giovanni, Giandomenico, Antonino, Fazio and Vincenzo Gaggini . After the death of his father (1536) he became a universal heir and took over the workshop management. First he completed the works that his father had begun or designed, such as the Tribuna of the Cathedral of Palermo or the marble decoration in the Chiesa Annunziata in Trapani . In the years of his artistic creation he left numerous works all over Sicily.

His main work is the marble work in the Chiesa di Santa Maria dell'Udienza in Roccella Valdemone . For the entry of the Viceroy Enrico Guzman Conde de Olivara, he provided the design for a triumphal arch in 1592 . A richly decorated archiepiscopal throne created by him in 1544 for the cathedral of Palermo has been lost. His collaborators were the brothers and Giuseppe Spatafora , Fedele Casella and his son Scipione .
