Scipione Casella

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Scipione Casella (also Scipione da Carona ; verifiable from 1543 to 1553) was an Italian sculptor , plasterer and silversmith .

Life

Scipione Casella was the son of Fedele Casella and was probably born in Carona . Together with his father he worked in Palermo in the workshop of Antonello Gagini . In 1543 he and his father signed a contract for a marble statue of "Saint Cecilia" with depictions of her legend. This work was obviously not completed as it was later completed by Vincenzo and Fazio Gaggini .

In the same year, he and Orazio Alfani were commissioned to decorate the vaults of the cathedral tribune . Around 1547/48 he received a payment for a shrine of "Saint Christina". In addition to these works, the relief with a "Beheading of St. John the Baptist" from 1542 can be identified, which is in the Museo Diocesano di Palermo .

Casella presumably died before March 1553.
