Orazio Alfani
Orazio Alfani , also Orazio di Domenico (* around 1510 in Perugia , † in December 1583 in Rome ), was an Italian architect and mannerist painter in Umbria and Sicily .
Life
Orazio was the illegitimate son of Perugino's pupil Domenico Alfani , from whom he was also trained. As his earliest independent work, he created frescoes in Perugia for the Cappella di San Giacomo of S. Fiorenzo in 1530 , which have been lost.
From 1539 to 1544 he was in Trapani and Palermo , where he was granted citizenship. In a contract dated May 23, 1539, he undertook to paint a wooden custodia together with the painter Francesco Martorana . This was followed by the order to paint and gild Antonello Gagini's marble arch in the Chiesa Annunciata in Trapani. From 1541 he worked with Martorana and the sculptors Fazio Gagini and Scipione Casella with stucco decorations in the Tribuna of the Cathedral of Palermo . On July 9, 1541, he signed a contract with Benedetto Rau to paint historical pictures in his palace in Palermo.
In 1545 he was back in Perugia, where he was accepted into the painters' guild and from then on worked more often with his father. In 1548 he painted a "Resurrection of Christ" for the University Church of Perugia. After the death of his father he took over his workshop and received numerous orders for panel paintings and frescoes. In 1573, together with the architect Raffaello Sozi, he founded the Accademia del Disegno in Perugia, a well-attended drawing school that today bears the name “Accademia di Belle Arti Pietro Vannucci”. Around 1576 he was appointed city architect of Perugia. Orazio died in Rome in 1583. His son Domenico di Orazio Alfani (doc. 1574–1585) took over his father's workshop as a universal heir. Orazio Alfani's painting is influenced by the mannerists Rosso Fiorentino and Raffaellino del Colle . His most important student in Sicily was the painter, sculptor and plasterer Antonio Ferraro .
