Raffaellino del Colle , full name Raffaello di Michelangelo di Luca dal Colle (* 1490 in Sansepolcro , † November 17, 1566 ibid) was an Italian mannerist painter mainly in Umbria .

Life

Raffaellino was a student of Raphael in Rome , with whom he occasionally worked. The painting of Villa Farnesina , begun by Raphael, was continued by his students Giulio Romano , Gianfrancesco Penni , Giovanni da Udine and Raffellino with the fresco cycle " Amor and Psyche " between 1517 and 1518. After Raphael's death (1520) Raffaellino stayed with Giulio Romano, with whom he painted frescoes in the Sala Costantino in the Vatican .

After the Sacco di Roma in 1527, many foreign artists returned to their hometowns. Raffaellino settled in Città di Castello near his birthplace Colle , where he ran a painting workshop. He worked for the local churches such as the cathedral and received orders from Sansepolcro and other places. Between 1539 and 1543 he worked for the Duke of Urbino , Francesco Maria I della Rovere . Together with Girolamo Genga , he decorated the Camera dei Semibusti, the Sala della Calunni and the Cabinetto Ercolano in the Villa Imperiale (near Pesaro ) with frescoes on a ducal order .

Around 1540, when Pope Paul III. In Perugia the Fortezza Paolina named after him was built, Raffaellino and other artists were busy decorating the rooms. In 1536 Raffaellino was asked by Giorgio Vasari to take part in the street decoration on the occasion of Emperor Charles V's entry into Florence (“come amico onorevole e come vicino”). A collaboration with Vasari is also documented in the following period, for example in Naples (1545), then in the refectory of the monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore and in 1546 in the Palazzo della Cancelleria in Rome. In the same year Raffaellino worked for the Olivetan Church in Gubbio before returning to Citta di Castello.

The importance of his work lies in the fact that he brought a strong personal note into his development of Mannerism and thus left the stereotype in painting common at the time. His students were Gherardi Christofano and Giovanni de 'Vecchi (1536-1614).
