history

Pennabilli Castle Rock

The castle on the rock of Penna was the ancestral seat of the famous Malatesta family .

The union of the two original places 'Penna' and 'Billi' was sealed in 1350 with the peace stone on the market square. 'Penna' comes from the Latin “Pinna”, “Billi” from “Bilia” (elevation between trees) after the characteristic shapes of the two hills. “Billi” is also attributed to the Etruscan fire god “Bel” , who was worshiped in a forerunner temple of the Church of San Lorenzo, which is dedicated to the fire martyr Laurentius of Rome . In 1572 Pennabilli became a bishopric ( diocese of Montefeltro ) and town.

After the Italian unification in 1860 Pennabilli belonged to the province of Pesaro and Urbino in the Marche region until August 15, 2009 . Due to a referendum in December 2006, Pennabilli and six other municipalities ( Casteldelci , Novafeltria , Maiolo , San Leo , Sant'Agata Feltria and Talamello ) moved to the province of Rimini in the Emilia-Romagna region . The Marche region sued the Italian Constitutional Court in vain against this territorial change . This finally confirmed the change.
