Verucchio ( Emilian : Vrócc) is an Italian municipality with 10,103 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Rimini in the Emilia-Romagna region . Verucchio has been a member of the I borghi più belli d'Italia association since 2017 . (The most beautiful places in Italy)
geography
The provincial capital Rimini is about 18 km northeast. Verucchio overlooks the Marecchia valley .
Districts (frazioni) are next to the main town Verucchio, Brocchi, Cantelli, Case Montirone, Case Pellicioni, Pieve Corena, Ponte Verucchio and Villa Verucchio.
The neighboring municipalities are Acquaviva ( RSM ), Borgo Maggiore (RSM), Chiesanuova (RSM), Poggio Torriana , Rimini , San Leo , Santarcangelo di Romagna , Sassofeltrio (PU) and Serravalle (RSM).
history
Traces of a settlement (probably Villanova culture ) from the 12th – 9th centuries. Century BC Were found in Verucchio. Later the Etruscans settled here . The city's name is derived from Vero Occhio (true eye) because it offers a good view over the surrounding landscape and down to the coast.
Malatesta da Verucchio, from the Malatesta family , was born here. His successors built the city into a mighty bastion. After the fall of Malatesta (15th century) was a fief of the Medici in the Papal States and remained until 1860 a part of the Papal States, except for a brief period under the rule of the Venetian Republic .

Attractions
- The Rocca Malatestiana (Malatesta Castle, 12th to 16th centuries, also known as Castel del Sasso) is one of the largest and best preserved fortresses in the Malatesta and was the birthplace of Malatesta da Verucchio. Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta expanded the fortress in 1449.
- The Romanesque - Gothic parish church was built around the year 990.
- Archaeological Museum
- The Franciscan monastery (around 1215) is the oldest in Romagna. Inside the church you can see a masterpiece from the 13th century by the Rimines painting school, which shows the crucifixion. Outside there is a tall cypress , which, according to a legend, was planted by Francis of Assisi .
