Chiesanuova is a municipality ( Comune in Italian , Castello in San Marino ) in the Republic of San Marino .

geography

Chiesanuova has 1,144 inhabitants and an area of ​​5.46 km². The place is located in the southwest of the republic on the river Rio San Marino (also called Torrente San Marino ), which forms the border with Fiorentino and (partially) San Marino and later flows into the Marecchia .

The place borders on the San Marino municipalities of Fiorentino and San Marino and on the Italian municipalities of Sassofeltrio ( province of Pesaro and Urbino ), Verucchio and San Leo (both in the province of Rimini ).

history

Chiesanuova, whose original name was Pennarossa (red feather) and which has a red feather in the coat of arms, voluntarily joined the Republic of San Marino in 1320 . At first the area was called Busignano (or Castello di Busignano, from Latin : Bucinius , a personal name). Chiesanuova (Eng. New Church ) received its current name in the 16th century when the original church of Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista in Curte was rebuilt. The current church is no longer in the same place and was designed by Gino Zani in 1961 in Romanesque style.
