mode

All teams are amateur clubs. The only professional club in the country, San Marino Calcio , plays in the third Italian division . The San Marinese League is one of the weakest in Europe. The champion takes part in the qualification for the UEFA Champions League , the runner-up and the national cup winner in the Europa League qualification.

Placement in the UEFA five-year ranking ( previous year's ranking in brackets ). The abbreviations CL and EL after the country coefficients indicate the number of representatives in the 2019/20 season of the Champions League and the Europa League .

Status: end of the European Cup season 2018/19

Until 1996 there was a 1st and a 2nd league (series A1 and A2), which were interlinked by promotion and relegation. The top of the table in the 2nd division was even qualified for the play-off round, in 1996, AC Libertas, was the only time a second division team won a European championship. Since then, the teams have been divided into two parallel groups.

The championship consists of two phases. First, in the preliminary round, the participants for the second group phase are played out. Then the champions will be determined in the play-offs.

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round, the 15 clubs play in two equal groups of eight and seven teams respectively. Each team meets the teams in its own group once. The top four teams in each group qualify for group 1 of the second group stage, the remaining seven teams in group 2.

In the second group stage, all teams play against each other twice. The best six clubs from Group 1, the first from Group 2, as well as the winner of the playoff from the second and third placed from Group 2 reach the final round.

Play-off round

Here the eight teams in the knockout system play the champions. Up to the semi-finals, two games are played, the final and the game for 3rd place in one game.

Since there is only one soccer league in San-Marino, there is no promotion or relegation of individual teams. Therefore, the same clubs took part as in the previous season. The 15 teams were drawn into the two groups shortly before the start of the season.
