The Divizia Națională is the top division in Moldovan football . It is operated by the Moldovan Football Association.

history

During the Soviet era , a regional champion was played in the Moldovan republic . Since the country became independent in 1992, an independent national champion has been determined.

In the spring of 1992 Zimbru Chișinău won the first Moldovan championship in a twelve-team league. The club dominated the championship until 2000 and was only overtaken by Constructorul Chișinău in 1997 . Sheriff Tiraspol has dominated the championship since 2001 .

The number of teams in the first division varies. Initially twelve teams were first class, from the second season 16 clubs played for the title. In 1994/95 there were only 14, in the following season again 16. From 1997 there was a reduction: initially to 14 clubs, from 1998 to ten teams. From 2000/01 there were only eight teams in the first division, for the 2006/07 season it was increased to ten clubs. In 2009/10 there were 14 teams for a short time. Since then, between eight and eleven teams have been played with a number that changes almost every year.

Current mode

In the 2020/21 season, ten teams will play for the title of Moldovan champion in the Divizia Națională. They play against each other four times in one season, two at home and two away games. A team receives three points for a win, one point is awarded for a draw.

The first in the table after 36 games will be crowned national champion and will qualify for the UEFA Champions League . The second and third in the table represent Moldova in qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League with the cup winners . The bottom of the table is automatically relegated and will be replaced by the best-ranked club in Divizia A in the following season . The penultimate plays in the relegation against relegation.

In the event of a tie, the direct comparison counts first . When determining the champion, an additional game will be played in the event of a tie in accordance with Article 10.5.1 of the Regulation of the Moldovan Football Championship.
