history

League division in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Development of the first leagues in Bosnia and Herzegovina after independence

The first official soccer championship was held in 1994 during the civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina . Under difficult conditions and constant game abandonment, the championship, in which only Bosniaks participated, was still able to play to the end. The first official champion of the then under the name Prva Liga Bosne i Hercegovine (German First League Bosnia and Herzegovina) was the NK Čelik Zenica .

In 2000/01, the NFSBIH and the Bosnian-Croatian Association decided to merge the leagues and play a joint championship after the four best teams of the previously independent leagues played a playoff for the championship of Bosnia-Herzegovina a year earlier. The name, which still exists today, was changed to Premijer Liga BiH . The first champion of the new Premier League was FK Željezničar Sarajevo .

Shortly after the first merger, it was decided in the 2002/03 season to hold the first joint championship together with Bosnian-Serbian clubs. Since then, the championship has been held with sixteen teams. In 2012, the NFSBIH decided to reform the league, stating that the Premier League will be reduced to twelve teams by 2015 .
