The Virslīga is the highest Latvian football league and has been officially called Optibet Virslīga since 2019 .
The game is played in the calendar year, the season begins in April and ends in November. Ten teams compete against each other in four rounds to determine the champion. The last club of a season is relegated and replaced by the champions of the 1st līga . The penultimate of the Virslīga and the runner-up of the 1st līga deny two relegation games to stay or promotion to the top division.
The league existed from 1927 to the middle of the 1944 season, then again from 1992. Meanwhile, the championship of 1991 is listed on the association side as the first after the reintroduction. In the 2009, 2011 and 2019 seasons, nine teams played in the Virslīga exceptionally.
