The Rheinenergiestadion in Cologne was the scene of the final.

The 2019/20 UEFA Europa League was the 49th edition of the second most important competition for European football clubs , which was held under the name of the UEFA Cup until the 2008/09 season. The season started with the first leg of the pre-qualification on 27 June 2019 should be on the original plan with the finale on May 27, 2020 Gdansk Stadium Energa Gdańsk end.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic , gaming operations had to be suspended in mid-March 2020. Some of the first legs of the round of 16 could still be played, the remaining games were postponed indefinitely. On March 23, the finals of the Champions League and Europa League were postponed indefinitely.

The competition was brought to an end in August in a final tournament that took place in Germany in the North Rhine-Westphalian cities of Cologne ( Rheinenergiestadion ), Düsseldorf (Merkur Spiel-Arena), Gelsenkirchen (Veltins-Arena) and Duisburg (Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena) . qualification

The division into the individual qualifying rounds is based on the UEFA access list. The order of the associations is determined by the association coefficients of the UEFA five-year ranking 2017/2018. If the cup winner of a national association qualifies for the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League or has already qualified for the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League, the next team from the national league will receive the worst possible starting position of this nation in the qualification for the UEFA Europa League, during the other teams move up accordingly and take over the next better starting place. If a club is not admitted to the UEFA competitions, the next best team in the national league moves up.

The teams with the higher club coefficient (KK) of the UEFA five-year ranking 2018/19 are seeded. If the club coefficient is the same, the order is determined by the rating points achieved by the teams in the previous season or in the following years. If the previous round has not yet been completed at the time of the draw for the respective qualifying round, the higher value of the two teams in the respective outstanding pairings will be used for the seeding list.

Group stage

From the group stage onwards, all games were centrally marketed by UEFA in order to generate greater media attention and thus increased advertising income.

48 teams from 26 national associations took part in the group stage, 17 teams qualified directly, plus six losing clubs from the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League play-offs and four other losing clubs from the third qualifying round (placement path ) of the UEFA Champions League 2019/20 . Another 21 places were determined in the Europa League qualifying rounds.

The group winners and runners-up qualified for the sixteenth-finals, while those placed third and fourth were eliminated from the competition. If two or more teams were tied after the group matches, the placement was determined by the following criteria:

  1. Number of points in direct comparison
  2. Goal difference in direct comparison
  3. Number of goals in direct comparison
  4. Number of away goals in direct comparison
  5. If, after applying criteria 1-4, two or more teams still occupy the same place in the table, criteria 1-4 are reapplied for these teams. If this does not result in a definitive placement, criteria 6–12 will be applied.
  6. Goal difference from all group matches
  7. higher number of goals scored
  8. higher number of away goals scored
  9. higher number of wins
  10. higher number of away wins
  11. lower number of minus points through yellow and red cards (yellow card 1 minus point, red card 3 minus points, yellow-red card 3 minus points)
  12. Club coefficients

The 48 teams qualified for the group stage were divided into four pots of 12 teams on the basis of their club coefficient (KK), and one team from each pot was drawn into one of the 12 groups (A to L); Teams from the same association could not be drawn into the same group.

The draw took place in Monaco on August 30, 2019 . The games took place from September 19 to December 12, 2019.

On March 13, 2020, UEFA announced that it would postpone all return legs to a date that has not yet been determined. On June 17, 2020 it was announced that the second legs will be played on August 5 and 6, 2020. Both games, of which the first leg was canceled, were decided in one game.
