Lautaro Javier Martínez (born August 22, 1997 in Bahía Blanca ) is an Argentine football player . He has been playing for the Italian first division club Inter Milan since the 2018/19 season and has been a senior international since 2018 .
Club career
Beginnings in Argentina
Lautaro Martínez began his career in youth as a defender. Due to his speed and his dribbling skills , he was later used in more offensive positions. He played in the youth of the Racing Club until 2015 and was accepted into the first team the following year. He made his professional debut on October 31, 2015, the penultimate matchday of the 2015 season, in a 3-0 home win against CM Crucero del Norte , when he came on for Diego Milito in the 80th minute .
Change to Europe
For the 2018/19 season Martínez moved to the Italian first division club Inter Milan . His contract runs until 2023. In his first season in the Inter jersey, he made 27 league appearances under head coach Luciano Spalletti (13 times from the start), in which he scored 6 goals. In the 2019/20 season , the 22-year-old Martínez made his breakthrough in Europe under the new head coach Antonio Conte . He was mostly used in the storm together with newcomer Romelu Lukaku and scored 14 goals in 35 league games (29 times from the start). Inter became runner-up with 82 points, one point behind Juventus Turin , which meant the best position since 2011 and the best point yield since the 2010 championship (also 82). In the Champions League , however, the team was eliminated in a group with FC Barcelona , Borussia Dortmund and Slavia Prague as third place, with Martinez scoring 5 goals in 6 appearances. In the knockout phase , Inter continued to play in the Europa League . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this had to be ended in a final tournament from the quarter-finals . Inter also played the round of 16 against Getafe FC in a simple round. In the semifinals, Martínez scored a brace in a 5-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk .
National team
Martínez played eleven times for the U20 of the Argentine Association in 2017 . For this he played for the first time on January 19, 2017 at the U20 South American Championship in the game against the U20 Peru and scored the 1-1 final score in the final minutes of the game, where he was called up over the entire season.
The Argentine selection qualified for the 2017 U20 World Cup in South Korea and Martínez was appointed to the squad for the tournament. He played two games, where he had to serve a suspension after a red card in the second game of his team. In the third group game, which meant the last game of the tournament for the selection after two previous defeats, Martínez scored two goals in a 5-0 win over the U20 Guineas .
On March 27, 2018, Martínez made his debut for Argentina in their 6-1 away defeat to Spain when he came on for Gonzalo Higuaín in the 59th minute .
Martínez, under coach Lionel Scaloni , scored his first goal in a competitive match for Argentina on June 23, 2019 in the Arena do Gremio , Porto Alegre during the Copa America 2019 in Brazil in a 2-0 win against Qatar and later also his second in a 2-0 against Venezuela. He reached third place with Argentina by beating defending champions Chile 2-1.
On September 10, 2019, he scored his first international hat trick in a friendly against Mexico when Argentina won 4-0.
