Lionel Sebastián Scaloni (born May 16, 1978 in Rosario ) is a former Argentine football player and current coach . Scaloni also has Italian and Spanish citizenship.
Player career
Scaloni began his football career at his hometown club Newell's Old Boys , where he was used for the first time in the Argentine Primera División in the 1994/95 season . He quickly became a regular player and stayed with the Estudiantes , the league rivals from La Plata . Most of his football career, however, spent the right winger in Spain, where he played from 1997 for over eight seasons at Deportivo La Coruña . Here he also achieved his greatest successes. In 1999/2000 La Coruña became Spanish champions, then twice runner-up and twice championship third. From 2000 to 2004, the club took part in the Champions League four times in a row and only dropped out in the quarter-finals twice, and once they even reached the semi-finals. Scaloni made 41 CL appearances during this time. The following two years were not so successful, Deportivo only ended up in midfield and the Argentine had to fight for his place in the team. During the 2005/06 season he went on loan to the English Premier League club West Ham United . There he reached the English cup final.
In the national jersey, Lionel Scaloni's career was not so successful. Although he was part of his country's U20 team at the 1997 Junior World Cup in Malaysia , which also won the title, he did not play for the first time in the senior national team until 2003 and was then rarely called up. Due to his extensive international experience, he was nevertheless accepted into the Argentine squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
