Deportivo lost 8: 3 in the highest-scoring game in the Champions League to date against Monaco. In the quarterfinals they faced the defending champions AC Milan . After a 4-1 away defeat, the European dream for Depor seemed already over, but a 4-0 home win in La Coruña turned the tide and brought the team to the semi-finals. There they were eliminated 0-0 and 0-1 against eventual champion FC Porto .

After the 2004/05 season, the successful coach Javier Irureta left the club after eight extremely successful years due to the disappointing results (only 8th place in the Primera División ). However, one waited in vain for improvement. At the end of the following season, the team was also in 8th place. However, the Copa del Rey achieved a small success with the semi-finals, where the team narrowly failed at the eventual winner Espanyol Barcelona (1: 2; 0: 0). In the league, the sporting decline continued in the 2006/07 season, which only ended in 13th place. In the cup they could again advance to the semi-finals where nan was clearly defeated by Sevilla FC in two games (0: 3; 0: 2).
