Miguel Ángel Lotina (born June 18, 1957 in Meñaka ) is a Spanish football coach who last coached Deportivo La Coruña .

Miguel Ángel Lotina is a Basque football coach who, like his great role model Javier Irureta, coached both Galician top clubs Celta Vigo and Deportivo La Coruña . He also worked as a coach at numerous other clubs in the 1st and 2nd league.

Coaching career

The beginnings

With CD Logroñés Lotina managed in his first season as head coach in professional football confidently the required relegation. After the season, however, he left the club and signed a contract with CD Numancia . With the Castilians, he laid the foundation for the later promotion to the second highest division, in which he was no longer directly involved, as he again accepted an engagement with the first division club CD Logroñés, for which he had previously worked successfully. But Lotina couldn’t change his team’s unsophisticated descent.

Segunda División

After the failed return to Logroño , Lotina hired the second division club from Badajoz . In the 1997/1998 season he narrowly missed promotion to Spain's elite league with CD Badajoz as fifth . Therefore, after a year he accepted the offer from his ex-club from Soria and led CD Numancia as 3rd in the first division. For personal reasons (he got the chance to train the traditional club CA Osasuna from his home country) he voluntarily remained second class in the following season. And he also led the team from Pamplona back into the Primera - as second in the table.

Primera División

In his first Primera season with CA Osasuna, he had to tremble until the last matchday before his team won 1-0 away at Real Sociedad , while Real Oviedo , who would have had one point, lost away. The class was held by only one point. In the following season you didn't have to tremble until the very end, but the 17th place in the table didn't leave much room to cheer.

International business

Since he had managed to stay up in the league twice in a row with modest means, the UEFA Cup participant entrusted Celta Vigo Lotina as coach. While they had to abandon the sails of the UEFA Cup in Round 3 (they lost to the then very strong Celtic Glasgow ), it was enough for a sensational 4th place in the league and the Galicians qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time . In this they reached the last 16 straight away, but Arsenal London was a size too big for the team from Vigo . In January 2004 Lotina was finally released from the Galicians. In the league, however, things went anything but good and so in the end the penultimate place and thus relegation was certain.

Espanyol Barcelona

In general, people had great confidence in Lotina's services and so he replaced Luis Fernández at the traditional Catalan club Espanyol Barcelona . If last year they just managed to stay in the league, Lotina led his squad completely surprisingly into the UEFA Cup. In the 2005/2006 season, however, things did not go well for him and his team in the league. On the last day of the match they were already relegated before Férran Corominas sealed the league with a solo in the 92nd minute with a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad. After the game, Lotina announced his retirement at the end of the season. Inspired by this experience, they achieved a 4-1 final victory over Real Saragossa in the Copa del Rey and , when they said goodbye, Miguel Ángel Lotina even brought the Espanyol supporters a title.

Relegation battle

In the 2006/2007 season Lotina took over the coaching position at Real Sociedad on the 8th match day after the Basques under José Mari Bakero had only collected 2 of a possible 21 points and were last in the table. Despite a furious race to catch up in the second half of the season, they were relegated to the penultimate and Lotina resigned from his coaching position at the end of the season.

Miguel Ángel Lotina has been the head coach at Deportivo La Coruna since summer 2007.
