The Villarreal Club de Fútbol , or Villarreal CF for short and generally known in German-speaking countries as Villarreal FC , is a Spanish football club from the city of Villarreal ( Valencian : Vila-real). The city has 49,045 inhabitants and is located in the province of Castellón , about eight kilometers south of the provincial capital Castellón de la Plana and about 60 km north of Valencia . The club plays in the highest Spanish league and plays its home games in the Estadio de la Cerámica, which has a capacity of 25,000 . The club's biggest rival is Valencia CF , and the derbies are a highlight of the first division.

The club colors are yellow-blue. The Villarreal CF plays at home in yellow shirts with yellow shorts and yellow socks. The club is nicknamed Submarino amarillo (yellow submarine ) because of the playing attire . The mascot is called Groguet and is a cartoon character with a submarine head. The association has 17,500 members (as of September 15, 2017) .

history

The club was founded on March 10, 1923, the first official game was played in October of the same year against the neighboring club Red y Star de Castellón . The club initially played in the regional league. In this regional league 1A, Villarreal was Spanish amateur champion in the 1935/36 season. Football then ceased during the Spanish Civil War between July 1936 and April 1939. Due to economic and sporting problems, the club disappeared from the surface for many years. It was not until the 1950/51 season that Villarreal played again in the Regionalliga 1A. In 1955/56 the club rose to the Third Division after winning relegation games . It was not until the 1960/61 season that the club rose again and rose again five years later. At the end of the 1969/70 season, the club rose to the second division for the first time. The club rose again several times up to the regional league before being promoted to the next higher league, the second division A , in 1991/92 .

In the 1997/98 season, the first promotion to the Primera División succeeded . In the decisive relegation game against SD Compostela , Villarreal CF prevailed due to the more away goals scored. After a year, the club was relegated and managed to get back up straight away in 1999/2000.

In the first few years you usually ended up in the middle of the table. With the South American national players, the club had minor successes in the UEFA Intertoto Cup . Villarreal qualified via the Intertoto Cup in 2003 and 2004 for the UEFA Cup and reached the semi-finals there in the 2003/04 season , where they failed against local rivals Valencia CF, which then won the cup.

The 2004/05 season ended the club in 3rd place in the Primera Division and qualified for the first time for the UEFA Champions League with two 2-1 victories against the English representative FC Everton . There, reaching the semi-finals, was the greatest success in the club's history. The opponents in the group stage were Manchester United , Benfica Lisbon and Lille OSC , later the Glasgow Rangers and Inter Milan were eliminated. In the semifinals, the team failed at Arsenal after a 1-0 defeat in the first leg, unable to score at home in the second leg.

In the 2007/08 season , Villarreal reached their best position in the Primera División with second place behind Real Madrid and thus qualified again for the Champions League. There they were eliminated again in the quarterfinals against Arsenal FC the following season. In the 2010/11 season turned Villarreal in the knockout round of the Europa League one after the Napoli , Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Twente Enschede and failed only in the semi-final on Portuguese representatives FC Porto .

In the 2011/12 season , FC Villarreal rose to the Segunda División after a 1-0 defeat in their last home game against Atlético Madrid . In the 2012/13 season he was immediately promoted again.
