Daniel "Dani" Parejo Muñoz (born April 16, 1989 in Coslada ) is a Spanish football player .

The central midfielder comes from the youth work of Real Madrid , where he was never able to assert himself in the first team even after a six-month loan interlude with the English second division side Queens Park Rangers . His breakthrough came afterwards at city rivals Getafe FC , where he played for two years from the 2009/10 season . From summer 2011 he was under contract with Valencia CF for nine years . There he had been the regular captain since 2014 and was considered a public favorite among the fans. He has been under contract with the first division club Villarreal since August 2020 .

Parejo played for various junior Spanish selections and was, among others, with the U19 and the U21 in the years 2007 and 2011 each European champion. He has been wearing the jersey of the senior national team since March 2018 .

Club career

real Madrid

Beginnings in Castilla

Dani Parejo was born in Coslada , Madrid and started playing football there in 1998 with the local CD Coslada. At the age of 14 he finally came to the famous La Fábrica , the youth department of the top club Real Madrid, via the UD Espinilla . On January 21, 2007, Real Madrid Castilla made his debut in the reserve team when he was substituted on for Rafael Santacruz in the 69th minute of the 0-1 home defeat in the second division match against FC Cádiz . He did another job at the end of the 2006/07 season . In the away game against Real Murcia , he was exchanged again and made the balance for the 2-2 final score. Also in the remaining two league games he was considered by head coach José Miguel González . In the following 2007/08 season , the central midfielder was already part of the regular staff and was able to impress with ten goals this season in 33 league games. The head coach of the first team, Bernd Schuster , had him train there several times this season and he was described as the “greatest talent” of Castilla by Real legend and honorary president Alfredo di Stéfano .

Borrow to the Queens Park Rangers

On August 4, 2008 Parejo moved for the entire 2008/09 season on loan to the English second division side Queens Park Rangers , since Schuster found no use for him in the men's team. He became the first commitment of the new club owner Flavio Briatore . On August 9, 2008 (1st matchday) he made his debut in the 2-1 home win against FC Barnsley in the Football League Championship when he came on in the 72nd minute for Patrick Agyemang . After he was used as a regular player at the beginning of the season, he slipped further and further out of the team in the course of the first half of the season because the young, technically savvy Spaniard did not like the physical, combat-oriented football game on the island. In early January 2009, Real Madrid ended the loan deal and brought Parejo back to Spain after 14 league appearances to replace the injured Rubén de la Red and Mahamadou Diarra .

Return for half a year

In the meantime, Bernd Schuster had already been on leave and under Juande Ramos Parejo was a firm part of the first team. On February 15, 2009 (23rd matchday) he made his debut in the 4-0 away win against Sporting Gijón in the top Spanish division when he came on for Sergio Ramos in the 79th minute . Despite an excellent second half of the Royal Parejo rarely received operating time and ended the season with five league games for Real Madrid.

Breakthrough at Getafe FC

In mid-July 2009 Real Madrid announced the return of midfield strategist Esteban Granero from Getafe FC , which had always been possible thanks to a buyback option. A few days later it was announced that Parejo would take the opposite route to city rivals, with Real Madrid again securing a buyback clause. At Getafe, he also met José Miguel González, his former coach at Real Madrid Castilla. On August 30, 2009 (1st matchday) he made his debut in a 4-1 home win against Racing Santander for his new club and contributed two assists. On October 8 (8th matchday) he scored his first goal in the Primera División in a 2-0 home win against Athletic Bilbao . He developed rapidly as a valuable player in this 2009/10 season and competed with González's son and his former Real team-mate Adrián González for a regular place. and was able to score against his former employer Real Madrid on March 25, 2010 (28th matchday). In the 2-4 home defeat, he grabbed the Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas the ball in front of the penalty area and then shot the ball into the empty goal. In the second half of the season he had to give way to Adrián more and more often and ended the season with six goals and four assists, which he was able to achieve in 28 league games. With Getafe FC, he qualified sixth in the table for the second time in the club's history for the UEFA Europa League .

In the following season 2010/11 he was already considered an undisputed regular player and became one of the best young midfielders in the league. With Getafe, however, he could not repeat the good pre-season and the club narrowly escaped relegation, while they did not get beyond the group stage in the Europa League. Parejo played a total of 44 competitive games in which he scored four goals and contributed six assists.

Valencia CF

Choppy first years

On June 14, 2011, Dani Parejo moved to the top club Valencia CF for a transfer fee of six million euros , where he signed a five-year contract. As part of the transfer, Valencia goalkeeper Miguel Ángel Moyà moved to Getafe CF on loan for the entire 2011/12 season . After he was not taken into account at the start of the season, he made his debut on 13 September 2011 in a 0-0 draw in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League for the Blanquinegros . In the next few months he was only used sporadically, but in March 2012 he pushed into the starting line-up of head coach Unai Emery and ended the season with 30 competitive appearances in which he remained without a goal participation.

Under the new trainer Mauricio Pellegrino , Parejo did not make the final jump into the starting eleven at the beginning of the next season 2012/13 and was repeatedly criticized for his bad morale. The start was marked by changeable performances by the team and Pellegrino's tenure ended with his dismissal in December 2012. Even under his successor Ernesto Valverde , he was unable to build on his achievements from Getafe times, but from February 2013 he placed him regularly. On April 20, 2013 (32nd matchday), he scored his first league goal for Valencia CF in a 5-1 home win against Málaga CF. In total, he played 36 competitive games this season, in which he scored twice and collected six templates.

The next 2013/14 season began under the direction of the new head coach Miroslav Đukić . The Serb familiar at the beginning not to the capabilities Parejos. However, he benefited from the fluctuating performance of his teammates and so slipped back into the starting lineup in October 2013. Đukić was sacked after poor results in December and his successor Juan Antonio Pizzi relied on Dani Parejo as midfield strategist. On April 6, 2014 (32nd matchday), he took the captain's armband for the first time in the 0-0 draw against Real Valladolid . With Valencia he made it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League , where they failed at Sevilla FC . In the league they only placed themselves in the middle of the field and missed the qualification for international business. During this season he played 46 competitive games in which he collected five goals and seven assists.

Breakthrough, first captaincy and phases of weakness

Dani Parejo in the jersey of Valencia CF (2015)

For the next season 2014/15 Dani Parejo was promoted to captain. Under the new head coach Nuno Espírito Santo , he improved significantly. He scored his first goal of the season in a 3-0 home win against FC Málaga on August 29, 2014 (2nd matchday). In the next few months he established himself as an undisputed regular player in the "bats". With a 3-1 home win in the top game against Sevilla FC on January 25, 2015 (20th matchday), he managed the first brace of his football career. He played 34 league games this season and was able to contribute eleven goals and eight assists to fourth place for the team.

On July 3, 2015, he extended his contract to summer 2020. However, he was unable to carry his excellent form into the next 2015/16 season and, like Valencia CF, only showed changeable performances. On November 7, 2015, he scored a brace in the 5-1 away win against Celta Vigo and prepared two more goals. As a result, FC Valencia didn't win a single league win until mid-February 2016. During this negative phase Nuno Espírito Santo had to leave and Parejo's performance deteriorated significantly. He was criticized by the supporters primarily for his lack of commitment and consistency. The new coach Gary Neville finally removed the armband from Parejo in January, but had to leave in March 2016 himself. Under Pako Ayestarán , Valencia stabilized again and prevented the team from relegating by reaching twelfth place in the table. Parejo played 50 competitive games this season, in which he scored eleven goals and prepared six more goals.

In the next 2016/17 season he occasionally ran into the captain's loop again, but was still exposed to constant criticism. Valencia got off to a devastating start and ended up battling relegation all season. In December 2016, Parejo hit the headlines outside of sports when he was spotted drunk in a bar while weak and suspended from a game. Nevertheless, Parejo came back to the starting line-up, collected 15 scorer points in 39 competitive games (six goals and nine assists) and again placed in the middle of the table with the Ches .

Rise to the crowd favorite

In the summer of 2017, Valencia CF hired the experienced Marcelino García as the new head coach and he managed to turn things around after the disappointing last few years. Marcelino announced right from the start that he wanted to bet on Parejo as captain and playmaker and he improved significantly under him. The team in particular benefited from his improved defensive game, at the same time he became the crowd's favorite and Valencia qualified for the UEFA Champions League with fourth place in the table . Parejo scored eight goals in 42 competitive games and prepared ten more goals.

In the following season 2018/19 Valencia got off to a weak start, but managed the successful turnaround at the turn of the year and qualified for the UEFA Champions League . In the UEFA Europa League they reached the semi-finals, where they were eliminated against Arsenal . In the Copa del Rey they could reach the final and defeated FC Barcelona 2-1 in this . Parejo played 56 competitive games this season, collecting ten goals and nine assists.

Marcelino did not survive another weak start in the next 2019/20 season and he was replaced by Albert Celades after just three match days . Parejo started the season well and reached ten goals and six assists by the end of the season, which he was able to collect in 47 competitive games. However, Valencia had to be content with a ninth place in the table and was thus behind their own expectations and the European Cup ranks.

On August 12, 2020, Parejo and his teammate Francis Coquelin moved after nine years and 125 points in 383 competitive games at Valencia CF to local rivals Villarreal , where he signed a four-year contract and met his former trainer Unai Emery again.

National team

Dani Parejo took part with the Spanish U19 national team at the U19 European Championship 2007 in Austria . There he came to short appearances in two group games and finally started in the final against Greece , where he scored the decisive goal for the 1-0 victory. Also in the next year he was on the pitch at the U19 European Championship in 2008 in the Czech Republic .

With the U20 he was at the U20 World Cup in Egypt in 2009 and failed in the selection in the second round to Italy . At the tournament he played all four games and scored one goal.

With the U21 he took part in the U21 European Championship 2011 in Denmark . He was substituted on in all three group games and he also stepped onto the field in the closing stages of the 2-0 final win against Switzerland .

In March 2018, at the age of 28, he was called up for the first time in the Spanish senior team . On March 27, 2018, he made his debut in a 6-1 friendly win against Argentina when he came on for Thiago in the 82nd minute of the game .
