Albert Celades López (born September 29, 1975 in Barcelona ) is a former Spanish football player on the position of midfielder . Most recently he played for the New York Red Bulls in the top division of North American football, Major League Soccer (MLS). He has headed Valencia CF since 2019 .
Player career
Albert Celades is one of the few Spanish players to have signed with both of their big rivals, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona . Celades, who grew up in Andorra , played four appearances in the Spanish national team and took part in the 1998 World Cup in France .
Since August 2008 he was without a club because his contract with relegated Real Saragossa was not renewed. He kept himself fit and after a month's trial he was signed to the New York Red Bulls in March 2009. On October 24, 2009 in the last game of the season against Toronto FC , he officially ended his career after he had previously announced his retirement from professional football.
Coaching career
In the summer of 2013 Celades was the head coach of the Spanish U16 national team ; In May 2014 he took over the U21 as the successor to Julen Lopetegui, who had switched to FC Porto . The qualification for the European Championship 2015 was missed, but Celades led the team to the European Championship 2017 in Poland and reached the final there, which the Spanish team lost to Germany .
In the run-up to the 2018 World Cup in Russia , his predecessor Julen Lopetegui , now the coach of the Spanish senior national team , was sacked. Then Celades became assistant coach under the interim coach Fernando Hierro . At the World Cup in Russia, the Spanish national team was surprisingly eliminated in the round of 16 after losing to the host and outsider Russia on penalties. A short time later, Albert Celades was part of the Real Madrid coaching staff , but had to leave the club after Lopetegui was sacked on October 29, 2018. In October 2019 Celades became the new coach of Valencia CF , where he was dismissed in July 2020.
