Career
society
At the beginning of his career Sergio Asenjo was considered one of the greatest goalkeeping talents in Spain and the designated successor to Iker Casillas of Real Madrid in the national team. Sergio Asenjo started in the Real Valladolid youth team . At the age of 17 he was a goalkeeper in Segunda División B , the 3rd Spanish league. In the summer of 2007 he was brought into the first team as the third goalkeeper. With this team he made his debut in the first division at the age of 18 after the first two goalkeepers were absent due to injury. The actual substitute goalkeeper has now played 13 games this season. In January 2008 he signed a significantly improved professional contract and rose to number one in the goalkeeping ranking.
Asenjo moved to Atlético Madrid for the 2008/09 season and had good prospects of a regular place after the departures of Grégory Coupet and Leo Franco . After an injury-related failure due to a torn cruciate ligament, however, the likewise young, new member of the team, David de Gea, took over his previously undisputed regular place and at the same time displaced Roberto to number 3. David de Gea then remained a regular goalkeeper, even when Asenjo returned to the squad after his injury.
In the middle of the 2010/11 season, Atlético Madrid awarded Sergio Asenjo to the league rivals FC Málaga until the end of the season . There he should collect match practice again. However, Asenjo only played five games, the reason was another cruciate ligament tear. After the 2010/11 season he returned to Atletico, but had to be satisfied with the role of number 2 behind Thibaut Courtois and ahead of Joel at the beginning of the season .
For the 2013/14 season Asenjo initially moved to Villarreal on loan before he was permanently committed to the 2014/15 season . With Villarreal he reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League in 2015/16 .
National team
Sergio Asenjo was also able to attract attention at the international level. At the U-17 European Championships in 2006 he won the bronze medal with Spain, and in 2007 the Spanish U-19 won the European title. In the semifinals he held two balls on penalties against France, in the final he did not allow a goal in the 1-0 victory over Greece.
In March 2015 he was in the national team for the first time . He made his debut in May 2016 in a friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina .
