Mariano Damián Barbosa (born July 27, 1984 in Lomas de Zamora ) is an Argentine football player .

Player career

Banfield and Villarreal

Mariano Barbosa began his career as a professional footballer at just a few kilometers south of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires located Club Atlético Banfield . There he played for three years from 2002 to 2005 until the Chilean Manuel Pellegrini brought him to the Spanish first division club Villarreal . There he shared the place in goal for two years with Uruguayan Sebastián Viera . With his team he reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in the 2005/2006 season - in the end, a single goal by Arsenal London decided the eastern Spaniards were eliminated.

Due to the strong competition at FC Villarreal , the Argentine Barbosa moved to the first division competitor Recreativo Huelva in 2007 , but was defeated in preparation for the goalkeeper duel to the also newly arrived Italian Stefano Sorrentino . After only four appearances in the Cup and not a single appearance in the league, Barbosa moved back to his home in Argentina in the summer of 2008, where he signed a contract with Estudiantes de La Plata .
