Stefano Sorrentino (born March 28, 1979 in Cava de 'Tirreni ( SA )) is an Italian soccer goalkeeper .

Player career

The beginnings

Stefano Sorrentino started his career as a professional footballer in 1996 at the age of 18 with Lazio Rome . There he was just as rarely used as in the following season at Juventus Turin - after all, he was able to win the Italian championship with Juve. For this reason, Sorrentino went to Juve's city rivals Torino Calcio in 1998 . There, too, the situation for the young keeper didn't get noticeably better. Although he was allowed to celebrate his Serie A debut in the 1998/99 season , this was his only appearance in the current season.

Torino

Since it was not going well for Sorrentino in the first division, it was decided to go on loan. However, Sorrentino had another disastrous season for him personally. He also sat on the bench for the entire season at SS Juve Stabia . In the 2000/01 season the dream of a regular place for the Italian finally came true. In a new loan deal, he was able to play 30 games for Varese FC . After returning to Torino Calcio in 2001, he made a name for himself there, too, so that he played almost 100 games for the Northern Italians in the following four years. Even after relegation in 2002/03, he remained loyal to the club.

AEK Athens

When Torino Calcio was dissolved in 2005 and all player contracts had to be terminated, Sorrentino left the club for Greece . There the Italian signed a four-year contract with AEK Athens . There he was able to develop further in terms of sport and also play in the Champions League . Since his wife no longer felt comfortable in a foreign country, Sorrentino asked the club whether he could go back to Italy. Since there were no adequate offers, Sorrentino had to stay with AEK, but promised to continue giving 100% for the club, which was highly appreciated by the Greek fans.

The last few years

After two years as a regular goalkeeper at AEK Athens, he moved away in the summer of 2007. One reason was the commitment of the Austrian national goalkeeper Jürgen Macho . Meanwhile, Sorrentino is loaned for the 2007/08 season to the Spanish first division club Recreativo Huelva , where he also had a regular place and played all season games. After the season he had to go again and was awarded for the 2008/09 season to the Italian first division promoted AC Chievo Verona .

Later career

When the Veneto player bought the goalkeeper, Sorrentino was initially eligible to play on loan and received a new three-year contract. After a successful season, he was prevailed against Lorenzo Squizzi to the goalkeeper and won the crowd favorite. Between 2009/10 and 2011/12 he played 37 games in goal. After 20 games in the 2012/13 season he left the club in the winter and moved to league rival Palermo . After a total of 117 league appearances, he moved again to Chievo Verona in 2016.
