- 193 : The Praetorian Guard slays the Roman Emperor Pertinax . He was succeeded by Didius Julianus , who won the office with the highest bidder. After a few weeks he too dies a violent death.
- 845 : Vikings led by Ragnar Lodbrok conquer and pillage Paris . They only leave the city after the payment of a ransom by the West Franconian King Charles the Bald .
- 1193 : After Emperor Heinrich VI. has contractually obliged to release the captured Richard the Lionheart only against payment of a ransom and after fulfilling other conditions, the Austrian Duke Leopold V hands him over in Speyer; the emperor transfers him to Trifels Castle .
- 1461 : Yorkists and Lancastrians split without decision in the Battle of Ferrybridge during the Wars of the Roses for the English throne . The battle of Towton takes place the very next day .

- 1776 : The Spaniard Juan Bautista de Anza is the first European to reach the Bay of San Francisco by land with his expedition and hoists the Spanish flag at today's Fort Point to incorporate the area into the viceroyalty of New Spain . - 2005 : An earthquake off North Sumatra with a magnitude of 8.6 on the Richter scale kills more than 1,300 people. It is an aftershock of the severe earthquake in the Indian Ocean on December 26th of the previous year.
