Eggehardus

Eggehardus († March 28, 1192 ) was a Cistercian monk , priest and from 1185 to 1192 first abbot in the Marienfeld monastery .

Life

Eggehardus entered the Cistercian monastery Hardehausen as a monk . In 1185 the local abbot Nikolaus sent him with some confreres to the area, which is now called Marienfeld , to found a monastery. When the monastery was re-established, Eggehardus was to lead as abbot. Hermann II von Katzenelnbogen , Prince-Bishop of Münster , performed the benediction .

Abbot Eggehardus began building the monastery and also accepted the first monks into the convent . Among the most important are the aforementioned Prince-Bishop Hermann II and Bernhard zur Lippe .

Eggehardus died on March 28, 1192 and was buried in the chapter house. On his tombstone it said:

Egghard in coelis regnat nunc Abba fidelis
Nomine Pastoris sidit hic; et nomen honoris
Hic tenuit primo, quem Christ vexit ab imo

In German translation:

Abbot Eggehardus is now king in heaven.
As a faithful shepherd he resided here,
here he first exercised the dignity of his office.
Christ exalted him.
