Shannon Briggs (born December 4, 1971 in Brooklyn , New York , USA ) is an American heavyweight boxer and former WBO world champion .
amateur
Briggs didn't start boxing until he was 19 (despite suffering from severe asthma). In his amateur career, however, he managed a remarkable 35 wins (18 KOs) with only 3 defeats. In 1991 he lost prematurely in the final of the Pan American Games against Félix Savón . In 1992 he was American heavyweight champion, but could not qualify for the Olympic Games in Barcelona in the preliminary rounds .
Professional career
Shannon Briggs turned professional in 1992 and received considerable attention in the USA for his offensive fighting style, his great eloquence and not least because of his striking appearance. After 25 victories against opponents who started up, however, in March 1996 he was knocked out against the unbeaten Darrol Wilson, who was never to reach world class .
After another four wins he was allowed to box on November 22, 1997 against the 48-year-old George Foreman for the so-called linear world championship . He won controversially on points, but showed, as often in his fights, a lack of stamina. He himself explains his lack of fitness with an asthma sufferer .
Nevertheless, he was after the victory as established in the world elite , so that on March 28, 1998 there was a world championship fight against WBC title holder Lennox Lewis . He showed a very committed fight and also won the first two rounds, before losing after a total of three knockdowns in the fifth round due to a technical knockout.
In March 1999 he boxed against Francois Botha in a draw, but in April 2000 he surprisingly lost, again with poor stamina, against the planned opponent Sedreck Fields on points. At this point Fields had already lost nine times in 18 fights. After four more wins, Briggs also lost clearly on points against Jameel McCline in 2002 .
He then got eleven early wins in a row, including 2005 against 44-year-old Ray Mercer . After years of strength training, he now weighed more than 120 kg. His actual boxing ability remained very controversial because of the dubious quality of his opponents.
He was mostly under contract with Cedric Kushner at the time , but signed options for his fights with Don King to get a WBO title fight that he would otherwise have been denied: he was in the IWBR computer rankings before the fight WBO title holder Sjarhej Lyachowitsch only on position 29. On November 4, 2006 Briggs surprisingly won against Lyachowitsch by a knockout in the twelfth round of the WBO title. On points, he was behind (twice with 4: 7, once with 5: 6 rounds) before he first sent his opponent to the ground and finally knocked him out of the boxing ring and knocked out in the last second of the fight.
On June 2, 2007 Briggs rose to his first title defense against the Russian Sultan Ibragimow in the ring and lost by unanimous decision. After the fight, he first announced his retirement from active boxing. 2.5 years later, however, he returned to the ring and defeated Marcus McGee by knockout in the first round. However, the result was canceled a little later because he tested positive during the doping control and was then banned for ninety days.
In 2010 Briggs got three more victories by first round-K. o. He then got the chance to box again for a world title and competed on October 16, 2010 at the O 2 World in Hamburg against WBC world champion Vitali Klitschko . He clearly lost this duel on points: the judges scored all rounds in Klitschko's favor. After the fight he was taken to the intensive care unit of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf because of the suspected cerebral hemorrhage ; A concussion , two fractures in the face, a muscle tear in the biceps and a burst eardrum were found as a result of Klitschko's many serious hits. Both the British referee Ian-John Lewis and Briggs Ecke were criticized for not ending the fight early despite Briggs' clear inferiority. Briggs said he refused to abort.
In 2014 and 2015 he presented himself to the public at private companies and public events of Wladimir Klitschko , trying to get him to fight.
On May 21, 2016 Briggs competed in London against the Argentine Emilio Ezequiel Zarate. He won the by KO in round 1.
In May 2017 Briggs was convicted of doping with testosterone during a doping control.
