Volker Josef Mosbrugger (born July 12, 1953 in Konstanz ) is a German palaeontologist , university professor and general director of the research institute and the Senckenberg Nature Museum in Frankfurt am Main .

Life

Mosbrugger studied biology and chemistry at the University of Freiburg and marine biology at the University of Montpellier from 1973 to 1979 . In 1979 he completed his studies with the state examination for the higher teaching post at the University of Freiburg in the subjects of biology and chemistry. From 1980 to 1983 he was a research assistant at the Biological Institute II at the University of Freiburg with Dieter Vogellehner , where he was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. received his doctorate .

He then moved to the Institute for Paleontology at the University of Bonn as a university assistant , where he completed his habilitation in 1989. In 1990 he was appointed full professor of general paleontology at the Institute and Museum for Geology and Paleontology of the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . There he was, among other things, spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center 230 “Natural Constructions” (Universities of Stuttgart and Tübingen) in 1994 and from 1994 to 2001 spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center 275 “Climate-coupled processes in meso and Cenozoic geo-ecosystems”. From 1996 to 1998 he was dean of the Faculty of Geosciences in Tübingen and from 1998 to 1999 vice dean. From 1999 to 2001 Mosbrugger held the office of Vice Rector of the University of Tübingen. In 1998 he received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize .

Since November 2005, Mosbrugger has been director of the research institute and the Senckenberg Nature Museum in Frankfurt. Since 2008 he has also been the scientific coordinator of the Biodiversity and Climate Research Center (BiK-F). On January 1, 2009 he was appointed General Director of the "Senckenberg Society for Nature Research".

Research priorities

Mosbrugger's main research interests are in the field of geological environmental research. On the one hand, he worked on the evolution and construction of land plants, especially in the Tertiary . Early on he also dealt with problems of historical environmental research under the aspects of paleoecology and paleoclimatology and analyzed current ecological and climatic changes against the background of geological processes: Basic knowledge about the causes of vegetation changes , about developments of ecosystems and mechanisms of a significantly warmer global climate system are his research goals.
