Cedric Kushner
Cedric Kushner (born July 18, 1948 in Cape Town , South Africa , † January 29, 2015 in New York City , United States ) was a South African-American boxing promoter .
Concert promoter
Kushner started out in the music industry at the age of 26 as a concert promoter with $ 5,000 on loan. He promoted Steppenwolf , Bob Seger , Queen , Fleetwood Mac , Grateful Dead , Rush , Neil Young and the Rolling Stones .
Boxing promoter
In 1984, more or less by chance, Kushner decided to get into the boxing business. His first protégés were Teddy Mann , Marlon Starling and the South African Gerrie Coetzee , whom he lost like Tony Tucker to Don King . He was friends with Dan Duva from Main Events and was able to play many matches in this collaboration.
In addition, his good international contacts helped him, for example with his partner Wilfried Sauerland , his boxers Charles Williams and Virgil Hill against Henry Maske.
In 1993 he founded the Heavyweight Explosion series , which has also become known in Europe, as a forum for the young hopes of the heavyweight division. He had Chris Byrd , Shannon Briggs , Corrie Sanders , Oleg Maskajew , Jameel McCline , Kirk Johnson , Michael Grant and Hasim Rahman under contract.
His most famous non-heavyweight was Shane Mosley . But he never quite succeeded in keeping these stars when they finally succeeded. In particular, the way Rahman wriggled out of his contract and joined King in 2001 after his sensational victory over Lennox Lewis , bitter him.
Most recently he had Briggs and David Tua under contract. In May 2006 he founded the company "Gotham Boxing" with which he wanted to spread more boxing over the Internet. Kushner died on January 29, 2015 in New York City at the age of 66.
Scandals
- In the late 1990s he admitted bribing the IBF with $ 100,000
- The Associated Press reported on December 6, 2005 that Kushner reached a law enforcement settlement fine of $ 60,000 for making false or misleading statements by his company in May 2003. He was banned from ever working in a leading position at a listed company.
