César Aira (born February 23, 1949 in Coronel Pringles , Buenos Aires Province ) is an Argentine writer and translator . His trademark are short novels of around a hundred pages, of which he has been publishing three to four a year since 1992 in Latin American and Spanish publishers.

Life

César Aira grew up in the pampas . He has lived in Buenos Aires since 1967 . In 1971 he was arrested as a participant in a student meeting and imprisoned for three weeks; he later described himself as an apolitical person.

Aira initially worked as a translator, translating among others Franz Kafka and Stephen King . In an interview published in November 2009 in the Mexican-Spanish magazine " Letras Libres ", he answered the question why he was considered an outsider in the literary world who wrote for the initiated but not for a large audience that he was the kind of writer belong, which always have readers, but isolated ones who do not become an audience that publishers count on if they want to make money.

César Aira holds seminars on literature, for example at the Universidad de Buenos Aires (on Raúl Damonte alias Copi , Arthur Rimbaud ) and at the Universidad de Rosario (on constructivism , Stéphane Mallarmé ). He gave the opening speech at the Berlin International Literature Festival 2016.

Honors

In 2016 Aira was awarded the Premio Iberoamericano de Narrativa Manuel Rojas .
