Ottmar Ette

Ottmar Ette (born December 14, 1956 in Zell am Harmersbach , Black Forest) is a Romance philologist and comparator (professor of Romance literature and general and comparative literature) at the University of Potsdam .

Life

Ottmar Ette received his doctorate in 1990 from the University of Freiburg im Breisgau with a thesis on José Martí . He completed his habilitation in 1995 at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt through Roland Barthes . Ette has held several guest lectureships in various countries in Latin America, Europe and the USA and understands Romance studies as an intercultural mediating and transdisciplinary science.

In 2014 Ottmar Ette was elected Honorary Member of the  Modern Language Association of America  (MLA), since 2013 he has been a full member of the humanities class of the  Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences , and in 2015 he was elected to the Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin . In 2010 he became a member of the  Academia Europaea and u. a.  Honorary Fellow at the Institute of Modern Languages ​​Research at the University of London's School of Advanced Study.

From 2004 to 2005 he was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin . From April 2010 to July 2010 he was a fellow at the FRIAS ( Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies ). He is co-founder of the ForLaBB (Research Association Latin America Berlin-Brandenburg).

He is also the founder and co-editor of the electronic magazine HiN - Alexander von Humboldt im Netz ( ISSN  1617-5239 ) and the Humboldt platform avhumboldt.de - Humboldt Informations online , as well as co-editor of the magazine Iberoamericana (Madrid - Frankfurt am Main). Since 2009 he has also been co-editor of the electronic magazine Istmo ( Revista virtual de estudios literarios y culturales centroamericanos , ISSN  1535-2315 ).

The focus of his research and teaching is on the following areas: Alexander von Humboldt, literary studies as a life science, conviviality, TransArea Studies: poetics of movement and literatures of Francophonie and Hispanophonie (in and outside Europe). There has been a separate internet platform for the research profile TransArea Studies since December 2011 ( POINTS - Potsdam International Network for TransArea Studies ).

Ette is head of the BMBF research project on Alexander von Humboldt American Travel Diaries: Genealogy, Chronology and Epistemology (2014-2017) and, since 2015, head of the long-term project A lexander von Humboldt on Travel - Science from the Movement of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, whose planned term is 18 years.

He is a co-applicant of the DFG Graduate Schools "Visibility and Visibility" (since 2011), "Between Spaces" (international DFG college with Mexico since 2009) and "Lebensformen + Lebenswissen" (since 2006). He is also a co-founder of the Latin America Berlin-Brandenburg Research Association (ForLaBB).

His work as editor includes the book series  mimesis - Romanische Literaturen der WeltPOINTE - Potsdam Inter- and Transcultural  Texts, as founder and co-editor of the four-language electronic magazine  HiN - Alexander von Humboldt on the net , the Humboldt platform  avhumboldt.de  and the magazines  Iberoamericana  (Madrid - Frankfurt am Main) and  Istmo (Revista virtual de estudios literarios y culturales centroamericanos) . Since 2011 he has headed  POINTS - Potsdam International Network for TransArea Studies.

With the program publication “Literary Studies as Life Science - A Program in the Year of the Humanities” written by Ottmar Ette, a discussion was sparked that went far beyond the humanities and cultural studies. Its publication was followed by three further dossiers in the next issues of the quarterly magazine, as well as numerous events and reviews, including in Die Zeit. All contributions to the discussion showed that these issues deal with basic questions of literature and life science , of literary studies and life science and thus with highly topical problems of basic philological research. Ette has been a jury member for the Voltaire Prize since 2017 .

Honourings and prices

Ottmar Ette was awarded the Heinz Maier Leibnitz Prize in 1987 for the manuscript of his new edition by Alexander von Humboldt: Reise in die Äquinoktial-Umgebung (Ed., 2 vols. Insel 1991) , for José Martí (Niemeyer 1991, trans. México: UNAM 1995) 1991 the Young Scientist Prize for Romance Literature from the University of Freiburg, Roland Barthes - An Intellectual Biography (Suhrkamp 1998) was awarded the Hugo Friedrich and Erich Köhler Research Prize in 2001.

Ottmar Ette has been Chevalier des French Ordre des Palmes Académiques since 2012 and a full member of the Academia Europaea since 2010 . In 2013 he was elected to the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences . In 2014 Ottmar Ette was elected Honorary Member of the Modern Language Association of America. In 2014 he received the Mexican science award "Escuela Nacional de Altos Estudios" from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México . In 2015 he was elected a member of the learned society Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin .
