The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) is the international research college of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg .

Its task is to enable outstanding scientists from all disciplines to work on their research projects by awarding temporary fellowships. After an initial funding phase from 2008 to 2013, the institute has been continued since 2013 with a modified concept and funding from the state of Baden-Württemberg and the University of Freiburg.

Previously, from 2008 to 2013, it consisted of four sections that reflect important research areas of the University of Freiburg (the School of History, the School of Language & Literature, the School of Life Sciences - LifeNet and the School of Soft Matter Research).

Since it was founded in 2008, more than 250 scientists have worked at FRIAS.

history

FRIAS was set up at the end of 2007 as part of the excellence initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Research Foundation (DFG) and officially opened on May 5, 2008. The institute is integrated into the University of Freiburg and promotes the humanities, natural sciences and engineering. The guiding principle of FRIAS is to promote top-level research and internationality at the University of Freiburg, as well as to promote interdisciplinary collaboration between different disciplines.

In the Excellence Initiative II, the future concept of the University of Freiburg was unsuccessful - this was decided by the responsible committee on June 15, 2012.

The new concept, which is open to all disciplines, provides for the establishment of two main research areas with one-year funding. The research focus for the academic year 2014/2015 is Designed quantum transport in complex materials and Dynamic alignments and dealignments in global southeast Asia . There are also various programs for awarding fellowships to younger and established scientists from Germany and abroad. Another future focus will be dialogue events on current scientific topics with high social relevance. In its realignment, the state of Baden-Württemberg granted the institute funding of 3.8 million euros for November 2014 to the end of 2017. In addition, the FRIAS will be [obsolete] from 2014 to 2019 with up to 3.3 million euros from EU Funds ( Marie Curie Cofund program ) supported. The main location at Albertstrasse 19 will remain.

organization

Three groups of fellows work at FRIAS :

  • Internal Senior Fellows: Scientists from the University of Freiburg
  • External Senior Fellows: Scientists from around the world
  • Junior Fellows: young scientists

FRIAS organizes scientific colloquia, workshops and international conferences in its research fields. The research results are published in specialist journals, monographs and our own FRIAS series.

The fellows are partially released from teaching and committee duties and are represented in teaching. The substitute professorships financed by FRIAS are often used to promote young scientists who have completed their habilitation.

Interdisciplinary activities

The large interdisciplinary FRIAS symposia each look at a topic from the different perspectives of the humanities, social and natural sciences. In 2009 the topic was evolution, in 2011 it was about disasters, and in 2013 the value of the body was discussed from different perspectives.

Smaller interdisciplinary event formats such as monthly dinner speeches or after hours conversations offer opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange.

International cooperation

Long-term research alliances and projects have developed from collaborations between internal and external fellows. In the Upper Rhine area there are close contacts to the Institut d'Études Avancées at the University of Strasbourg and the University of Basel .

In October 2010 FRIAS organized a conference on University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study (UBIAS) in a Global Perspective: Promises, Challenges, New Frontiers , in which a total of 32 Institutes for Advanced Study from 19 countries took part. This resulted in an independent UBIAS network with member institutes from all over the world.
