Raphaël Confiant (born January 25, 1951 in Le Lorrain in Martinique ) is a Creole writer.

Life

Raphaël Confiant completed his school days in Fort-de-France and then studied English and political science at the Institut d'études politiques ( University of Aix de Provence ). Already during his studies he was a vehement advocate of French Creole .

From 1979 he was entrusted with a teaching position at the Université des Antilles et de la Guyane . In 1981, Confiant was instrumental in founding the Creole weekly "Antilla", in which he has published regularly ever since. At this time, Confiant also made his debut as a writer. He published his first works in the Creole language and with printing subsidies from his own pocket, as the local publishers were otherwise not prepared to publish an unknown author. After initial success, Confiant was able to publish his first novel in French in 1988, Eau de Café .

As “ Chabin ”, which means “black” descent and light skin in Creole, Confiant defines its identity as a Creole. Together with the writers Jean Bernabé and Patrick Chamoiseau , Confiant initiated the Créolité ; a literary counter-movement or a counterpoint to the Négritude Aimé Césaires . It all started in 1989 with her “ Eloge de la créolité”.

Confiant was politically active in the local party Bâtir le Pays Martinique (BPM).
