Casa de las Américas ( House of the Americas ) is a Cuban cultural institute. It was founded on April 28, 1959 by Haydée Santamaría , who ran the center until her death in 1980. The task we set ourselves is to promote socio-cultural exchange between artists from Latin America , the Caribbean and the rest of the world.

The Casa de las Américas has donated various prizes , including for literature , musicology , composition and theater .

The institute is also the publisher of the cultural magazine Casa de las Américas, revista de letras e ideas .

The directors after Haydee Santamaría were among others Mariano Rodríguez (1980-1986), Roberto Fernández Retamar (1986-1989) and Arturo Arango (1989-1991).

In 2004 the Casa de las Américas was awarded the Simón Bolívar Prize of UNESCO for its work .
