Walter Acosta

Walter Acosta (born March 1, 1935 in Las Piedras , Uruguay ) is a Uruguayan actor , theater director and dramaturge .

Life

Acosta began his theater career in 1957 at El Galpón and was a member of the ensemble until 1961. In 1962 he founded the Teatro Los Comediantes in Las Piedras , to which he was affiliated until 1967. He then went to London and worked there for more than twenty years in the BBC as director of the drama department. He has also worked as an independent theater director and has worked with actors such as Kenneth Branagh , John Gielgud , Julie Christie , Derek Jacobi and Trevor Howard . In London, he brought plays by Latin American authors in particular to the stage, including Prueba de fuego by Ugo Ulive and OK by Isaac Chocrón . He has also directed several times in Switzerland, where he has lived in Geneva since 1992 . He has now settled in Buenos Aires .

Acosta, who also wrote the works Yo, Diderot and En el fondo de un pozo vacío , was also a member of the board of directors of the Federación Uruguaya de Teatros Independientes (FUTI) and has received several awards over the course of his career. In Australia in 1988 he received the Premio Pater for Vladimir Gubaryev's play Sarcófago , which deals with the Chernobyl disaster . The Cuban Casa de las Américas awarded him the 2001 theater prize for El escorpión y la comadreja . In the following year, he was first mentioned by the Comisión Administradora del Fondo Nacional del Teatro (COFONTE) for El trapecio loco . His direction of the play Meyerhold performed at the Comedia Nacional . En el fondo de un pozo vacío prompted the Uruguayan Ministry of Education and Culture to award Acosta in 2003. In 2010 he received first prize at the 9th Concurso del Fondo Nacional (9th competition of the National Fund ) of the Teatro Irma Adó for Mi voz en el viento .
