Las Piedras is a city in Uruguay .
geography
It is located in the 4th sector of the Canelones Department south of the immediately adjacent city of Progreso , which is separated from it by the Arroyo Colorado , which rises in the east of Las Piedras , and a few kilometers north of the capital Montevideo . In the eastern part is also the source of the Arroyo del Gigante, which leads north from there . Outside the urban area in an easterly direction in the area between Las Piedras and the neighboring village of Villa Crespo y San Andrés the Arroyo Canelón Chico , the Arroyo de Toledo and its tributary Piedritas , the Arroyo de Mendoza , the Arroyo Miguelete and the Arroyo de las Piedras are emerging . The latter forms, among other things, the southern boundary of Las Piedras' on its further course. In the western part of the city there are also the sources of three smaller left-hand tributaries of the Arroyo Colorado . These are the de San Isidro , the Pírez and the de las Conchillas .

Las Piedras was classified in the Ciudad category on May 15, 1925 by Law No. 7,837.
The city is best known for the battle of Las Piedras , which took place here on May 18, 1811. It was the first military success of José Gervasio Artigas , the national hero of Uruguay. The siege of Montevideo, which was subsequently undertaken together with the Argentine armed forces, had to be abandoned unsuccessfully due to the intervention of Portuguese - Brazilian troops. May 18th is a public holiday in Uruguay ( Battle of Las Piedras ).

Attractions

The 19th century Bosch mill ( Molino de Bosch ), the last of 18 windmills in the area of the Department of Canelones, is one of the most important buildings in the city .

The western part of the city is home to the municipal cemetery ( Cementerio Municipal ) of Las Piedras, which is housed within a square area surrounded by a yellow wall. In addition to earth and urn graves, there are also classic family graves with funerary chapels.

With 71,268 inhabitants (as of 2011), it is the second largest city in the department after the Ciudad de la Costa in terms of population and is one of the largest cities in Uruguay.
