Ciudad de la Costa is a city in Uruguay .
geography
It is nestled between Arroyo Carrasco and Arroyo Pando , on the banks of the Río de la Plata, directly east of the capital Montevideo, then in the department of Canelones in its 37th sector .
history
The city was only founded on October 19, 1994 by Law No. 16.610. In this it was regulated that the area between Arroyo Carrasco and Arroyo Pando in the judicial districts ( Secciones Judiciales ) 19 and 20 of the Departamentos Canelones are combined to form the Ciudad de la Costa. The seaside resorts in the area had already grown together in terms of their development. These included: Barra de Carrasco , Shangrilá , San José de Carrasco , Lagomar , Solymar , Lomas de Solymar and El Pinar . These had developed in the 1980s and 1990s from small fashionable resorts to larger housing estates, which is why it was decided to combine them into one city.
Infrastructure
The economy is shaped by services. Although tourism is still dominant, it has lost its importance in the area too soon, as the urban character of residential area has caused many Uruguayans to drift to more remote holiday destinations. The population growth is nevertheless the highest of all major cities in Uruguay, which means that there are currently infrastructure problems.
The Ruta Interbalnearia (IB) runs through the city .
Residents
With 112,449 inhabitants (2011) it is the second largest city in the country.
