Shangrilá is a seaside resort belonging to Ciudad de la Costa in the Canelones Department in Uruguay .
geography
Shangrilá is located in the southern part of the Canelones department in sector 37 . The place is located in the western part of Ciudad de la Costa and borders with its southeast side on the Río de la Plata . San José de Carrasco adjoins the coastline that continues to the northeast , while Parque Carrasco shares a border with Shangrilá in the southwest .
history
Founded in 1946 as a resort on 57 hectares in the immediate vicinity of Montevideo and three kilometers from Carrasco International Airport , the population rose by 70 percent between 1985 and 1996. The name of the man-made seaside resort (Spanish: Balneario ) was derived from the novel Lost Horizon by James Hilton : Shangri-La is a synonym for paradise .

Shangrilá is located on the south side of Ruta 101 shortly before the Ruta Interbalnearia branches off a few hundred meters to the northeast .
Residents
The population of Shangrilá is 3,195 (as of 2011). In the summer months, the number of residents and guests rises sharply: the beach is the main attraction and in summer attracts many families with its leisure activities for children and its calm bathing water.
