Canelones is one of the 19 departments of Uruguay .

geography

location

The department, which covers an area of ​​4,536 km², surrounds the capital Montevideo, so that most of the suburbs of this city are located in the department Canelones. It borders on San José to the west, Lavalleja and Maldonado to the east, and Florida to the north . The western border forms the Río Santa Lucía , the eastern border the range of hills of the Cuchilla Grande . In the south the department borders on the Río de la Plata . Its capital, which is also called Canelones , has 19,631 inhabitants. The largest city, on the other hand, is Ciudad de la Costa, part of the Montevideo metropolitan area, with just under 100,000 inhabitants.

Natural resources

In the department area there are crude oil deposits near Santa Lucía . Further mineral resources are feldspar near kilometer point 27 of Ruta 6 and black granite near Soca .

Canelones has a total of 44 secondary schools ( Liceos ), in which 36,467 students are taught by 2,885 teachers. The oldest Liceo in the department is the Liceo Departamental "Tomás Berreta" , which was founded in 1912 and is located in the department capital Canelones . (As of December 2008)

In the extreme south, near Montevideo, is Carrasco International Airport , the country's most important airport. The railway lines Montevideo - Rivera , Montevideo - Rocha , Montevideo - Minas , Montevideo - Río Branco , Montevideo - Melo , Montevideo - KM 329 , Montevideo - Colonia and Montevideo - Mercedes run through the department . Residents

Canelones is the second most populous department of Uruguay after Montevideo . While 485,240 inhabitants were counted in 2004, the number of inhabitants determined in the 2011 census was 520,187. Of these, 253,124 were men and 267,063 women.

In May 2010 Marcos Carámbula ( Frente Amplio ) was elected to the post of Intendente des Departamentos. He succeeded Estanislao Chiazzaro , who had held the office since February 5, 2010, after Carámbula was already Intendente of Canelones from July 7, 2005 until Chiazzaros took office .

Canelones has its own anthem. This is the "Himno a Canelones", the text of which was written in 1930 by Eudoro Melo . The setting was created by Bernardo Irigaray .
