Rocha is a department in Uruguay . It is located in the southeast of the country on the Atlantic Ocean , on the border with Brazil .

geography

location

The department borders on the departments Treinta y Tres and Lavalleja in the northwest and west and on Maldonado in the southwest.

Natural resources

Peat is found in the Bañados de Rocha in the middle east of the department . In addition, there are deposits of black sand ( Arenas Negras ) at Aguas Dulces on an approximately 35 km long section between La Paloma and Chuy . Salt , magnesia , potassium sulfate and gypsum are stored at La Coronilla .

Settlement structure

The capital Rocha has 25,422 inhabitants. The second largest city is Chuy on the border with Brazil with 9,675 inhabitants. (Status: 2011) The larger settlements in the department include Castillos , Lascano , Velázquez and Cebollatí . There are also numerous seaside resorts on the Atlantic coast.

history

The Departamento Rocha was created on the basis of a legal regulation of July 7, 1880 by splitting off from the Departamento Maldonado.

Population development

While 69,937 inhabitants were counted in 2004, the number of inhabitants determined in the context of the 2011 census was 68,088. Of these, 33,269 were men and 34,819 women.

Infrastructure

education

Rocha has a total of eleven secondary schools ( Liceos ), in which 6,315 students are taught by 627 teachers. The oldest Liceo in the department is the Liceo Nº 1 Departamental "Cora Vigliola de Renaud" , which was established in the department capital Rocha and was founded in 1912 . (As of December 2008)

traffic

The Montevideo - Rocha railway runs through the department . In addition, the following roads run through the department: Ruta 9 , Ruta 10 , Ruta 13 , Ruta 14 , Ruta 15 , Ruta 16 .

economy

The economy is based on agriculture , fishing and tourism . There are many seaside resorts on the Atlantic coast, the most important being La Paloma, Cabo Polonio , Valizas, Aguas Dulces, Punta del Diablo , Santa Teresa and Laguna Negra .

politics

Artigas Barrios of the Frente Amplio holds the leading position of the executive branch of the department, the office of the intendente .
