Lascano is a city in Uruguay .
geography
It is located in the north of the Rocha Department in its 3rd sector a few kilometers from the Río Cebollatí . Lascano is surrounded by significant swamps and wetlands and is located at the intersection of Rutas 14 and 15 . The distance to the state capital Montevideo is around 260 kilometers. It is around 100 kilometers to the departmental capital Rocha . The closest larger settlements are José Pedro Varela and 19 de Junio in the northwest, Velázquez in the south and San Luis al Medio or Chuy in the east.
history
The city was founded on February 10, 1876 on the fields of the landowner Francisco Fernández and was originally called Tres Islas . This came about through the area of the same name, not far away. The current name can be traced back to one of the founders of the place with the same name. It was granted the status of a small town ( villa ) on July 4, 1908. Already at the beginning of the 20th century, the place, for which around 55 hectares of planning area was available at that time, had a well-developed infrastructure. In an area characterized by cattle breeding, for example, there was a public school, a court, a police station, a telegraph, a post office and a local council (Comisión Municipal). A newspaper was also located here. The two barrios Correa and Otamendi had already formed in the north of Lascano , while the districts Fernández , Gamón and Porvenir were in the south . The population structure in this phase of Lascano's development is described as cosmopolitan, but with a high proportion of Spanish immigrants. Then, on November 5, 1952, Lascano was classified as a city by Law 11,874.
Residents
At the beginning of the 20th century, Lascano had around 2000 inhabitants. Today (as of 2011) the population of Lascanos is 7,645, of which 3,788 are male and 3,857 are female.
