Rocha is the capital of the Rocha department of the same name in southeast Uruguay .

geography

The city is located in the southern part of the Rocha Department in its Sector 1 and Sector 7 . On the western outskirts of the city, the Arroyo Rocha meets the Arroyo de los Rocha in the far northwest of Rocha . In the western part of the city, there is also the right-hand tributary Honda . With the del Ejido , a smaller tributary of the Arroyo de las Conchas passes through the city in the east . The towns of La Riviera and Puerto de los Botes and the Laguna de Rocha are just a few kilometers south of the city .

history

The first settlers to settle in Rocha were Spanish emigrants from the Asturias region . Rocha was founded on November 23, 1793 under the name Nuestra Señora de los Remedios de Rocha . On January 10, 1894, Rocha was given the status of a Ciudad (city) by the legal regulation of Ley 2.252 .

environment

The Rocha region is home to most of the country's protected areas and also the largest. Two of the natural parks in Rocha are protected by the program for the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable development of the Eastern Wetlands (el Programa de Conservación de la Biodiversidad y Desarrollo Sustentable en los Humedales del Este - PROBIDES).

Most of the country's bird species nest in the Rocha region and around 60% of the other animal species can also be found here. There is also a large population of black-necked swans in the world.

economy

Rice cultivation is an important source of income in Rocha. The wetlands are ideal for growing this plant and offer the residents of the communities many jobs. Tourism is also important.

Sports

Rocha is home to the football club Rocha Fútbol Club , which currently plays in Uruguay's second-highest division, the Segunda División .

Rocha had 25,422 inhabitants at the 2011 census, of which 12,600 were men and 13,362 women.
