Pedro Humberto Vaz Ramela (born December 2, 1963 in Rocha , Uruguay , † December 6, 2012 in Santiago , Chile ) was a diplomat and politician from Uruguay.

biography

After attending school, he studied law and social sciences at the University of the Republic and ended both sessions with the promotion to doctor . After completing his studies, he worked as a lawyer from 1987 to 1989 and at the same time as a lecturer for the French language at secondary schools from 1988 to 1989 .

In 1989 he entered the diplomatic service as a candidate and, after completing the course in 1990, was employed as a third secretary in the Foreign Service. After working as a secretary in the Regional Directorate for Eastern Europe and in the Directorate for Constitutional and International Treaties , he first became secretary and then counselor at the embassy in Mexico . He was then appointed to the Council of the Permanent Mission to the International Organizations in Geneva . In this role he was responsible for economics and trade.

On his return to Uruguay, he first became Director for Bilateral Economic Relations and then Deputy Director General in the Directorate General for Foreign and International Economic Relations. On May 13, 2005 he was appointed ambassador to Brazil . From March 2008 to August 2009 he was Undersecretary (Deputy Minister) of Foreign Minister Gonzalo Fernández .

President Tabaré Vázquez finally appointed him Minister of Foreign Relations on August 31, 2009, following the resignation of Gonzalo Fernández. He held this office from September 1, 2009 to February 28, 2010. Pedro Vaz was a member of the Partido Socialista del Uruguay , which is part of the government alliance Frente Amplio .

In 2010 he was appointed ambassador of his country to Chile by President José Mujica . There he died after a heart attack in his house in Santiago de Chile.
