The Partido Socialista del Uruguay ( PSU abbreviation , German  Socialist Party of Uruguay ) is a Uruguayan party that was founded in 1910.

Today the party is part of the ruling Frente Amplio coalition.

Members

Dr. Emilio Frugoni was the party's main leader and spokesman for years. He was one of the most prominent representatives of socialism in Uruguay and also the first member of the party to enter the House of Representatives. Daisy Tourné was the first woman in the history of the party to win a mandate for the PSU. Mónica Xavier received this honor as the first female senator of the PSU. The best-known party member is the former President Tabaré Vázquez .

From 2001 to 2013 the party was headed by former Uruguayan Foreign Minister Reinaldo Gargano . Eduardo "Lalo" Fernández had been general secretary of the party since August 2006. In December 2011, at the 47th Congress of the party, Yerú Pardiñas, who had been sitting in the Cámara de Representantes for the Cerro Largo Department since 2010, was appointed as his successor.
