Tabaré Ramón Vázquez Rosas (born January 17, 1940 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan politician and was President of the South American country from March 1, 2005 to March 1, 2010 and from March 1, 2015 to March 1, 2020.

Vázquez studied medicine at the Universidad de la República and is a cancer specialist . Vázquez became a member of the Partido Socialista del Uruguay ( Socialist Party of Uruguay ) in 1971 and was mayor of the capital Montevideo from 1990 to 1994. As a candidate for the Frente Amplio ( Broad Front ), a coalition of left-wing parties, he was a candidate for the presidency in 1994 and 1999. In the 1999 elections in Uruguay he received 40% of the vote.

In the elections in October 2004 he ran again. He won with 50.45% in the first ballot against the candidates of the traditional parties Jorge Larrañaga ( Partido Nacional ) with 34.30% and Guillermo Stirling ( Partido Colorado ) with 10.36%. He had previously been predicted good chances of ending the almost 180-year-old interplay between the conservative Los Blancos and the liberal Colorados . Vázquez replaced the incumbent President Jorge Batlle .

Vázquez is committed to a strong welfare state and good relations with Mercosur . Furthermore, he tries to maintain good relations with the USA.

In November 2008, Vázquez stopped abortion liberalization by vetoing a draft law on the Frente Amplio. On December 4th, due to differences with his party, he resigned from the chairmanship of the Socialist Party and resigned from the party. After a visit of Bolivian President Evo Morales , he announced in July 2009 that he exports of leaves of the coca plant will support over Uruguay, by becoming removed from the list of dangerous drugs.

In the June 1, 2014 primaries , he was elected as a candidate for the October 2014 presidential election.

In the 2014 presidential election , he was finally elected for the second time since 2004. His party friend and successor in office, José Mujica , was constitutionally prohibited from running again. Raúl Fernando Sendic took over the office of Vice President . The 52-year-old human geneticist is the son of the former Tupamaro leader Raúl Sendic and was Minister of Industry during Vázquez's first tenure. After his resignation in 2017, Lucía Topolansky took over the office of Vice President.

In the 2019 presidential election , Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou was elected to the presidency with 50.8% of the vote, which he took over on March 1, 2020.
