Luis Alberto Aparicio Alejandro Lacalle Pou (born August 11, 1973 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan lawyer and politician . He has been President of Uruguay since March 1, 2020 with a five-year term.

Life

Luis Lacalle Pou is the son of former President Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera and a member of the Partido Nacional . He has been a Member of Parliament since 2000 when he took over from his mother.

Lacalle Pou ran in the June 1, 2014 primaries and was elected as the sole candidate for the presidential election.

In 2019 he ran again in the primaries of June 30, 2019 and was elected as a single candidate for the presidential election. Beatriz Argimón became his candidate for the office of Vice-President. After finishing second behind Daniel Martínez ( Frente Amplio ) (39.2%) in the elections on October 27 with 28.6% of the vote , he won the runoff on November 24 with 50.8% (against 49.2%). He took office on March 1, 2020 and heads the Lacalle Pou cabinet .

Political assessment

Lacalle Pou is considered conservative. In the runoff election for the presidency he received support from "liberals, conservatives and apologists of the military regime from 1973 to 1985."
