Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera (born July 13, 1941 in Montevideo ) is a lawyer and was the 36th President of Uruguay from March 1, 1990 to March 1, 1995 .

Lacalle Herrera is the grandchild of the famous politician Luis Alberto de Herrera (1873-1959). He is married to Julia Pou and they have three children together: Pilar, Luis Alberto (future president 2020–2025) and Juan José.

Career

Lacalle studied law at the Universidad de la República in Montevideo. At the age of 17 he took an active interest in politics and joined the Partido Nacional . After his studies he held many political offices, for example he was a member of the National Committee of the Partido Nacional, the Finance Committee, the Transport Committee and the Public Work Committee as well as a senator .

In 1987 Lacalle was appointed Vice President of the Senate and on July 19, 1999 was elected national chairman, the highest position in the Partido Nacional . The creation of the Mercosur common market together with Presidents Carlos Menem , Argentina , Fernando Collor de Mello , Brazil and Andrés Rodríguez from Paraguay can be seen as the greatest success during his presidency .
